700 asylum seekers relocated from Nkamira Transit Site to Mahama

700 asylum seekers were relocated from Nkamira Transit Site to Mahama refugee camp located in Kirehe District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda.

The move aims to prevent overcrowding as more people flee Eastern DRC to Rwanda. UNHCR is working with the Government of Rwanda and partners to assign shelter and distribute core-relief items.

From 1996, Rwanda has been hosting primarily Congolese refugees. They include refugees who fled in the 1990s, as well as more recent arrivals who fled to Rwanda during renewed hostilities in eastern DRC between M23 rebels and security forces since November 2021. (End)
