A school in Gatsibo district closed following a student’s strike

The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) has temporarily closed Gakoni Adventist College, in Kiramuruzi sector, Gatsibo district, following a student’s strike on 7 February 2021 that destroyed the school’s property.

“The decision was taken subsequent to acts of vandalism by some students and refusal to cooperate with the school administration and police, who came to restore order in the college”, according a statement issued by MINEDUC.

The statement said that sixteen students who incited the riot are in police custody and the rest of the students have been asked to return home.

“The Ministry of Education and concerned authorities are investigating the disturbance,” reads part the statement signed by the Minister of Education, Valentine Uwamariya.

Gakoni Adventist College has 372 students, of which 288 are Congolese refugees from Nyabiheke and Gihembe refugee camps located in the same area. (End)
