Agribusinesses from six countries to train in sustainable food systems development

Kigali: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the African Union Commission (AUC), the Government of Ireland, are partnering to coach delegates from public and private sector from Angola, Ireland, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda in “Executive Coaching for African Leaders from the Public Sector and Food Industry on Engaging the Private Sector in Sustainable Food Systems Development” from 23 –26 July 2019, at Serena Hotel, Kigali, Rwanda.

The delegates will visit the Kigali’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to understand the potential role of SEZ’s in transforming the agri-food sector.

The coaching is aimed to equip the country teams with actionable take-aways tailored to the needs of the National Agriculture Investment Plans. Emphasis will also be placed on embedding private sector ownership in strategy planning, with participants having a unique opportunity to analyse and learn from Irish agri-food sector.

This programme will explore tools, ways of working and programmatic approaches to improve private and public sector engagement for sustainable agri-food sector strategy development, including the processes underpinning the National Agriculture Investment Plans (NAIPs). The coaching will also address the need for multi-sectoral planning, including the role of education and research and development.

Since 2017 FAO, the AUC and the Government of Ireland, have been collaborating on the topic of Building Sustainable Food Systems in support of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the 2014 Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agriculture Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods (2015-2025).

This partnership included a learning journey to Ireland in February 2018 by public sector officials and food industry representatives from 10 African countries to share experiences and learn about the development of the successive Irish agrifood sector strategy process articulated under Food Harvest 2020 and FoodWise 2025.
