Ambassador of Japan signs a grant contracts with Water Aid Japan for a water and sanitation project in Kirehe District

On Wednesday, March 16, 2022, H.E. Mr. Masahiro IMAI, Ambassador of Japan to Rwanda, and Ms. Kaoru TAKAHASHI, Executive Director of Water Aid Japan (WAJ), signed a grant contract for a water and sanitation project in Kirehe District.

The project aims to improve access to water as well as sanitation and hygiene environment in two sectors in Kirehe District, namely Kigarama and Nyamugari, where safe drinking water, decent toilets, and hygiene practices are big challenge.

Through the Project, the water system with 22km of water pipe and 7 water taps will be constructed in order to provide safe drinking water to 16,000 people who live alongside the water system.

The Project will also construct 24 school toilets in 3 schools, and roll out the awareness campaign for “Open Defecation Free (ODF)” in 30 villages.

The Government of Japan will provide USD 496,123 for this project.

Japan particularly through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been contributing to improving access to safe water and quality of water supply services in Eastern Province, assisting in infrastructure development of water supply facilities as well as capacity strengthening of its operation and maintenance.

Ambassador Imai said that he expects the Project to synergize with Japan’s past and ongoing projects, and promote further the improvement of access to water in Kirehe District. (End)
