Covid-19: drivers warned against using vehicles in unauthorized activities

Kigali: Rwanda National Police (RNP) reminds drivers of vehicles authorized to operate in the lockdown period to use them “exclusively for the intended essential purposes.”

RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera said that some drivers of authorized vehicles have been found abusing the “pass” and transporting unauthorized people.

“Using these authorized vehicles to transport unauthorized people or used in other prohibited activities, is a violation of the directives, which will call for immediate action,” he warned.

He reminded companies offering essential services that vehicle pass stickers can be obtained from Rwanda National General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

Stickers are issued for free-no payment-to vehicles of institutions and firms authorized to work in this period, to transport their staff to and from work. Individual vehicles are not eligible to get these stickers.

“As law enforcers, we are alert while ensuring that government directives are respected, we inspect even vehicles authorized to operate in this period. Drivers and companies or institutions are urged to observe this and use these vehicles for the intended purpose.”

“Using these authorized vehicles to transport unauthorized people or in unauthorized activities is violation of government directives on the prevention of Coronavirus spread, which will call for immediate action,” CP Kabera said.

Government directives require people to leave their homes in when going for essential services such buying foodstuff and medical services.

“We urge people to understand and comply with the instructions, which are meant to protect their lives, which calls for unnecessary movements and to stop abusing those essential services for their own benefits thinking that they helping people while risking lives” RNP Spokesperson advised.

People going for essential services are also reminded to follow the recommended safety guidelines like not shaking hands, avoiding contact with other persons, washing hands regularly and practicing social distance of one-metre distance. ”(End)
