Police warns against violation of gov’t orders

Kigali: Rwanda National Police (RNP) has issued strong warning against members of the public, who violate government orders meant to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera said that despite awareness on the spread and dangers of the pandemic and subsequent directives on effective measures to combat it, some people have taken it lightly and still pose danger to their lives, households and the country in general, which will not be tolerated.

The warning follows separate operations conducted Saturday, Sunday and Monday in different parts of the country, where people were found in varied activities contrary to government orders, which specify certain activities and business prohibited for at least two weeks.

Under the directives issued by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Dr. Edouard Ngirente, all unnecessary journeys and movements out of homes, and travel between different cities and districts of the country, is not permitted.

All borders and bars are closed. Shops and markets are also closed, except those selling food, medicine (pharmacies), hygiene and cleaning products, fuel and other essential items and motorcycles are not permitted to carry passengers.

“Some bars, motorists and cyclists were found operating. Others were caught holding crusades like the case in Nyarutarama where one Rubayiza Emmanuel, who was found preaching to about 50 people on the street and a similar case in Kanyinya, Nyarugenge District where eight people were found in the same room praying,” CP Kabera said.

“We have also witnessed people running different prohibited errands including unnecessary movements. This will not be tolerated.”

“We call upon the general public to be responsive to these safety precautionary measures. Remember, protecting yourself and others is everyone’s responsibility. RNP wishes not to take stringent measures, but necessary force and resources will be deployed if need be.”

He said that Police officers have been deployed across the country and are working with local authorities and other relevant institutions to ensure that the orders are implemented and respected. (Fin)
