RDF provides health care to more than 900 in Uganda

Kigali: A Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) contingent made up of 22 medical personnel and construction Engineers returned home from Uganda where they spent one week participating in the East Africa Community Armed Forces Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Week. 

The Contingent led by Colonel James Ruzibiza conducted CIMIC activities in Eastern Uganda, Tororo District that culminated into celebrations of Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ (UPDF) Army Day known as TAREHE SITA as decided in the EAC Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence held on 24 November 2017 in Kampala.

RDF medics jointly with their colleagues from UPDF attended to 955 medical cases that included 223 Ophthalmology, 64 dental, 299 lab tests, 247 general consultations, 119 HIV Testing/Counselling and 3 voluntary male circumcision cases at Mukuju and Mulanda Health Centres.

In other CIMIC activities, RDF construction Engineers rehabilitated a Female ward at Tororo district Hospital, which at the time of EAC Armed Forces week closure was at 90% of its completion.  The local population, the prime service beneficiaries, attested to the RDF media reporter that they were thankful and wishing the EAC Armed Forces CIMIC Week could have lasted more than one week.

The closing ceremony of this EAC Armed Forces CIMIC Week, which coincided with TAREHE SITA celebrations, were presided over by the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. He thanked all contingents from EAC Member Partner States for honoring their invitation and for the valued work done during the only a period of one week. He also promised to support the idea of EAC Armed Forces week whose activities are to rotate annually in each EAC Member States.

Apart from military officials from EAC Armed Forces, the ceremony was also graced by the presence of Rwanda State Minister for Foreign Affairs and EAC Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, Martin Ngoga the EALA Speaker, the Rwanda High commissioner in Uganda Major General (Rtd) Frank Mugambagye, Rwanda Defence Attaché in Uganda Colonel James Burabyo among many other dignitaries present.
