Kagame, Salva Kiir talk regional insecurity

This afternoon at Urugwiro Village, President Kagame held talks with the Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), President Salva Kiir of South Sudan, and his delegation, as well as Dr. Peter Mathuki, EAC Secretary-General.

“They discussed the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity in the region, as well as the need to uphold integrity and accountability in the functioning of the East African Community”, according to the Rwanda State House.

As tensions mount between Kigali and Kinshasa over allegations of official support for rebel groups in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, there are growing concerns that an escalation could undermine recent gains in stability across the Great Lakes region and East Africa.

Rwanda says the ongoing war in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is becoming a national security threat for Kigali, confirming its fears of a possible regional conflict. (End)
