Kwibuka25: Remains of 522 genocide victims accorded decent burial in Kabuye memorial

Kigali: On Tuesday 23rd April 2019, remains of 522 bodies of genocide victims were accorded decent burial in Kabuye genocide memorial site in Ndora Sector, Gisagara District. All the bodies have been recently recovered. They include 494 bodies recovered from Kabuye and 28 others recovered from different areas of Gisagara District.

Karigirwa who spoke on behalf of families whose relatives were accorded decent burial today, urged the residents of Kabuye to frequently visit the memorial to draw lesson from there so that the goodness may take over unkindness. She impugned those who are knowingly reluctant to provide information on the whereabouts of bodies of the Tutsi who were killed during the genocide.

She said “residents of this area have completely failed. Last year, we accorded decent burial to genocide victims and you did not show us these people so we could bury them with others whereas you had information on their whereabouts. If you don’t show us the bodies so we can accord them decent burial, it will be hard for our offspring in case they recover the bodies after we will have passed ».

Jérôme Mbonirema, president of IBUKA in Gisagara District, comforted the survivors whose relatives were killed in Kabuye and thanked the government for providing the period to commemorate the genocide against the Tutsi and for establishing different programmes to supports the survivors. He also thanked former RPA_Inkotanyi troops who rescued them, stopped the genocide and liberated the country.

Jérôme Rutaburingoga, Gisagara District’s mayor, comforted the survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi, especially those who lost their loved ones at Kabuye. He said that everyone should play their role to ensure that genocide never happens again.

Senator Charles Uyisenga who was the guest of honour comforted the survivors too. He condemned those who do not participate in commemoration activities and those hiding information on whereabouts of bodies of the Tutsi killed in the genocide. He said that as Rwandans we all have the responsibility to commemorate and reflect on those we knew or those we did not accord decent burial; adding that commemoration gives us the strength to build a new nation.
