Letter from Florida Senator Rubio to Secretary of State Blinken on Algeria as one of world’s largest buyers of military equipment from Russia

In a letter addressed on Wednesday 14 September 2022 by the Republican Senator of Florida, Mr Marco RUBIO, to the Secretary of State Mr Antony J. BLINKEN, Mr RUBIO pointed to Algeria as being “one of the main global buyers of military equipment from the Russian Federation”.

In this regard, he relied on the law entitled countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (P.L.115-44), which authorises sanctions against any party that, according to the US President, “knowingly engages in a significant transaction with a person who is part of, or operates for or on behalf of, the defence or intelligence sectors of the government of the Russian Federation”, in order to request the appropriate designation of parties whose significant purchases of Russian equipment are leading to Russia’s destabilising actions.

In this respect, according to Mr. Rubio: “Russia is Algeria’s largest military supplier, as it is also among the top four buyers of Russian arms in the world, culminating in a $7 billion arms contract in 2021.

According to the Republican senator, “the influx of money to Russia, regardless of its source, will only strengthen the Russian war machine in Ukraine”. Finally, he called for “taking seriously the threat that Russia continues to pose to global stability”.
