Kigali: Heavy storms overturned a boat carrying a yet-unknown number of people heading to attend commemoration activities in Western Rwanda – leaving scores dead, officials said Wednesday afternoon.

According to Western Province officials, 6 bodies were recovered by rescuers. However, the 50 survivors of the ordeal could only identify about 10 people as missing, officials said.

The group was heading to join others as well as officials to commemorate the Tutsi Genocide. Witnesses said more than three-quarters were not wearing life jackets.
