Over 100 police officers attached to the Central region headquarters in Kigali in Remera, Gasabo District, donated blood on Tuesday, May 27, in a life-saving exercise organized by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC).
The blood donation drive also included members of the District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO) and youth volunteers, highlighting their dedication to public health and humanitarian assistance.
The Central Region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Wellars Gahonzire, said that the initiative reflects the Police’s broader duty to protect and preserve life.
“Our responsibilities as police officers include the duty of safeguarding the health of the public we serve. The effectiveness of our policing efforts also hinges on our commitment to this fundamental principle,” said CIP Gahonzire.
He emphasized that donating blood is essential for ensuring community safety by supporting the health and well-being of those in need.
Christine Mukakarangwa, who is in charge of donor mobilization at Blood Transfusion Centre in Kigali, emphasized the critical value of blood donation.
“Donating blood is giving life. Patients in need have no alternative—only blood from a healthy person can save them,” she said.
She pointed out that donated blood is vital in cases of vulnerability such as childbirth complications, accidents, and severe illnesses like malaria, stressing that the demand is high and keeping the blood bank stocked requires greater people’s understanding and consistent participation.
Mukakarangwa expressed gratitude to Rwanda National Police and donors for their active role in saving lives.
The activity is expected to continue in the District Police Units (DPUs) in the City of Kigali, as part of ongoing RNP human security drive, to support the national blood bank. (End)
