Police recovers Frw4 million stolen from car in Kamonyi

Police in partnership with local leaders and residents in Kamonyi District, recovered Frw4 million, which was stolen after thieves broke into a car.

The money was recovered from two suspected thieves, both aged 30, who were arrested about one hours after they committed the alleged crime, in Rubona Village of Muganza cell in Runda sector.

At least Frw4.5 million was allegedly stolen from the car after thieves vandalized the car window.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Habiyaremye, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said that the search for the suspected thieves was swiftly commenced after the victim reported the alleged theft.

“The victim was parked at a site in Rubona where he is currently constructing a house, when thieves broke into his car at about 5p.m, and stole a bag that allegedly contained Frw4.5 million,” SP Habiyaremye said.

The victim was going to pay his employees.

“Police, local leaders and residents worked together to trace the suspects, who were arrested one hour after stealing the money. They were found with the same stolen bag but with only Frw4 million. They were handed over to RIB at Runda station for further investigations,” SP Habiyaremye added.

Article 166 of law determining offences and penalties in general states that; any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one (1) year and not more than two (2) years and a fine of not less than Frw1 million and not more than Frw2 million, community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.

In article 167, the penalty for theft doubles if the offender committed the crime through burglary, climbing or possession of keys other than the owner; the theft is carried out during the night or the theft is carried out by more than one (1) person. (End)
