Kigali: Government of Rwanda has apologized to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni over recent out-bursts from some officials dismissing his speech on Liberation Day July 04, it was reported.
In the much adapted speech, Mr. Museveni lay most of the success in ousting the former government of Juvenal Habyarimana to deceased Rwanda Patriotic Front commander Major General Fred Gisa Rwigema. He also described President Kagame as a youth – which is reported to have infuriated some government officials who believed he was minimizing their boss’ role.At some point, Army chief General James Kabarebe took reporters along the supposed route of the war effort led by President Kagame. General Kabarebe told eager reporters that had it not to have been for Mr. Kagame, the RPF would have been “annihilated”. He also described the fallen former RPF commanders as incompetent for dying on the battle field.
Another unknown senior RPF officer penned another article under the headline; "Rwanda: The Liberation Struggle Belongs to the People,” that was to be published on July 15 in the New Times, but the copy issue was withdrawn before it went into circulation on the orders of President Kagame, The Observer newspaper said.
The article had however already been posted on the website of The New Times and had been picked by some online news services such as AllAfrica.com. (The article is reproduced on page 5)
Uganda officially complained against the insensate maligning of President Museveni by Rwandese government officials, according to The Observer. Now detailed emerging indicate that President Kagame has not take the reaction from his lieutenants lightly. Mr. Kagame is keen to maintain the improving relations between the two sides after years of bad air.
Kigali has delivered an apology to Uganda’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Richard Kabonero.
Kabonero declined to comment on the matter. “I don’t speak to the press, I have no comment,” he said after he expressed shock as to how The Observer got to know about the issue.
