Kigali: Government is engaging Interpol to arrest Genocide fugitive Stanislas Mbanenande alleged to be either in Sweden or Chad, it emerged Monday evening.

Unknown Mr. Mbanenande stands accused of taking part in the mass slaughter of Tutsis in the Bisesero hills of former Kibuye prefecture – where up to 50,000 people perished. A specially constituted Gacaca court in Kalongi district – western province last week sentenced Mr. Mbanenande in absentia – handing him the life sentence.

The BBC Kinyarwanda service reported Monday evening that Mr. Mbanenande is believed to be in Chad employed by the UN. He is however said to be originally coming from Sweden.

The Spokesman of the Prosecutor’s office Mr. Augustin Nkusi declined in the BBC interview to affirm the exact location of the fugitive. He said Mr. Mbanenande would be tracked down and arrested by Interpol - to be handed to Rwanda even if he is working with the UN.
