Kigali: President Kagame and UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon will meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to continue discussing how to deal with the contested leaked UN report on ‘Genocide’ in DR Congo, details show.
The two leaders meet Wednesday morning – but were only able to establish a rapport for discussion. Foreign Affairs Minister has been the one spitting the fire on behalf of Kigali which Mr. Ban came to try to put off.
Mr. Ban’s office in New York said Thursday he will meet with President Kagame ahead of the UN summit on the MDGs due September 20-22. Kagame co-chairs the high level panel on the MDGs with Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
The Secretary General himself hinted yesterday as he prepared to live Kigali that discussions would continue as part of efforts to convince Rwanda not to withdraw its peacekeeper.
“We have agreed to continue our dialogue on all these issues when President Kagame visits New York next week. This is in important part of the United Nations' dialogue with the concerned countries, and that will certainly continue,” Ban told reporters at the airport.
However, it was clear that there was nothing the UN chief would do with report. Instead, he said “I have encouraged President Kagame and the Rwandan Government and all concerned countries to submit their comments by the end of this month”.
“Those comments will be released together with the final version of this mapping report simultaneously, with the [other] comments received by those countries concerned,” said Ban.
