President Kagame calls on leaders to match teachings with actions

Kigali: President Kagame on Tuesday called on leaders to match teachings they receive at different occasions with their actions and purpose.

President Kagame was addressing close to 2000 Government, Church and Business leaders who attended the Purpose Driven Leadership Gathering, organised by Peace Plan Rwanda and led by Pastor Rick Warren, at the Kigali Convention Centre.

“Leadership means leaders with a purpose, who want those they serve to achieve their goals. Learning is essential but it must be followed by actions. If you do not apply what you learn, you will not achieve your goals. Teaching must have a purpose. I want us to find a way to match what we learn with our actions and our purpose. Whether you are leaders in the public sector or other sectors, we need to examine why we always find we have fallen short of the objectives we have set. It doesn’t mean that the teachings were not valuable, it means that we have fallen short of turning the teachings into action.” President Kagame said.

President Kagame also reminded leaders that making the right choices was within their means and part of their responsibilities.

“Making the right choice is not expensive. It is something you have to demand of yourself before you take any action. You have to be able to stand behind your choice as one that moves you towards results.  You should not be awaiting aid to help you to make the right choices. There is no assistance for that. It has to come from you. You can be taught but the ultimate choice is yours” President Kagame added.

In his teachings, Pastor Rick Warren underscored the two things that every leader needs: Character and Competence.

The Purpose-Driven Leadership conference brings together Government Leaders, Church Leaders and Business Leaders, with an overall goal of having the three sectors know and collaborate with each other as they contribute to the country’s transformation journey.  (End)
