Kigali: President Kagame is scheduled to arrive in Kinshasa Wednesday morning for a working visit, officials said, making it only the second for a Rwandan leader to the Congolese capital since 1994.
In the first visit to Kinshasa since he became head of state 10 years ago, President Kagame will join other world leaders for the 50th anniversary celebrations of Congo’s independence.
Mr. Kagame will also hold discussion with RDC counterpart Joseph Kabila, officials said.
The President stepped on Congolese soil in August last year where the two countries hammered a major agreement that has eventually led to the ongoing lull in fighting in eastern Congo, as a result of improving relations.
The two countries have exchanged ambassadors already, but Congolese diplomat is yet to settle in Rwanda as he has not secured residence. The former seat of the embassy closed more than a decade ago remains a run-down structure located within the same area as President Kagame’s home.
Ex-president Pasteur Bizimungu was in Kinshasa for the swearing-in of President Kabila’s father in 1997 after successfully ousting deceased Mobutu in a rebellion.
