Upon its completion by the end of the year, the Rusumo Falls hydroelectric power plant is poised to generate 80 MW of power. A significant portion of this energy will be dedicated to powering the Bugesera International Airport in Rwanda, marking a transformative milestone in the region’s power infrastructure.
This decision not only ensures reliable power for the airport – which is expected to be completed by 2026 – but also extends benefits to neighboring Tanzania and Burundi, which will share equally in the plant’s power supply with 26.6 MW, respectively.
The Rusumo Falls power plant utilizes the Kagera River, which flows through all three countries, and serves as a milestone in cross-border cooperation on sustainable energy development. Last month, it was announced that the plant is ready for commissioning.
Meanwhile, the Bugesera International Airport aims to pivot Africa’s aviation industry towards a greener and more interconnected future and represents a two billion dollar investment. (End)
