The government of Rwanda has embarked on 5 years Second Urban Development project (RUDP II, 2021-2025) which intends to improve access to basic services, enhance resilience as well as strengthening integrated urban planning and management in the city of Kigali and Six secondary cities.
The secondary cities include Huye, Muhanga, Musanze, Nyagatare, Rubavu and Rusizithat were identified to reduce pressure from the city of Kigali.
RUDP II is a continuous investment package that is built on the successful completion of RUDP I which delivered almost 84km of access roads in secondary cities and upgrading of three hectares of unplanned settlement in city of Kigali.
The project will objectively support the resilience capacity in the city of Kigali and other cities through comprehensive upgrading of informal settlements sites, rehabilitation of the prioritized wetlands and addressing flood risks of 6 identified hotspots of Rugunga, Rwandex-Majerwa, Gisozi Mukindo, Nyabisindu, Kinyinya and Karuruma.
The focus unplanned sites to be upgraded in the city of Kigali are Gatenga, Mpazi, Nyabisindu and Nyagatovu. These also involves servicing of access and footpaths roads, construction of drainage infrastructure, street lighting, public parks and market improvements to enhance socioeconomic development and improve standard of living to the communities.
Currently, the civil works in all secondary city districts are at 24.21% for asphalt roads and standalone drainage combined. Funded by the World Bank, RUDP II project is implemented in line with the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) and vision 2050. (End).
