Senate calls for acceleration of sustainable development of cities

The Plenary Sitting of the Senate recommended the Government to elaborate the plan for the implementation of master plans of the cities and the districts and to complete the preparation of the remaining masterplans. Senators also endorsed government reform of the management and governance of the satellite and secondary cities.

The Plenary Sitting of the Senate approved the report of the Committee on Economic Development and Finance on the oversight of the Government’s actions to accelerate the sustainable development of cities. The purpose of the Committee’s activity was to assess how far the country’s goals for the sustainable development of cities are achieved.

The Committee on Economic Development and Finance consulted different institutions in charge of the development of cities, including the Ministries, public institutions, and the private sector. In addition, Senators interacted with local leaders of the City of Kigali and 17 Districts and explored activities and projects related to urban development across the country.

During the oversight activity, the Committee on Economic Development and Finance found that citizens benefit from urban development activities, by getting jobs and developing infrastructure among others. The Committee urged the enhancement of masterplans, increasing public awareness and encouraging the private sector to invest in the development of cities. (End)
