Somali women MPs honour victims of Genocide against the Tutsi

Somali MPs laid a wreath at the burial place where 250,000 victims of the genocide are laid to rest

Earlier today, a delegation of Senators from the Federal Parliament of Somalia paid respects to the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi at Kigali Genocide Memorial.

The lawmakers are members of the Women’s Caucus Committee from the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia who are in Rwanda for a benchmarking visit.

Somali women legislators laid a wreath at the burial place where 250,000 victims of the genocide are laid to rest and observed a minute of silence in their honour.

Guided through the museum, the lawmakers had an opportunity to learn more about the history of the genocide, from the colonial roots of ethnic division through to the horrors of the killings, and gain insights on Rwanda’s journey to foster a shared sense of national identity.

Somali women Members of Parliament (MP) expressed amazement at the path the country had since taken, especially in regard to reconstruction of society morals.

Somalia and Rwanda share historic relations and the visit aims to strengthen the ties between the two countries. Somalia and Rwanda are both East African Nations. (End)
