Somali women senators met leaders of Pro-Femme and ARFEM

Today, women senators from Somalia met with leaders of Pro-Femme Twese Hamwe,-an umbrella of civil society organization aimed at advancing the status of women-, and the Association of Rwandan Female Journalists( ARFEM, Association Rwandaise des Femmes des Media). They got insights into their roles in empowering women in Rwanda.

The lawmakers are members of the Women’s Caucus Committee from the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia. They are in Rwanda for a week-long visit to learn from the country’s achievements in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

From 29 January to 3 February, Somali women legislators tour different government institutions, to witness how Rwanda creates environments where women actively contribute to shaping policies and driving socio-economic progress through civic education programs, and legislative reforms.

They are discussing the challenges and opportunities for women’s participation in politics and peacebuilding in Somalia, where women make up 24% of the federal parliament.

The visit is part of a bilateral cooperation agreement between the two countries, which aims to strengthen their ties and share experiences in various sectors, including governance, security, and development.  Somalia and Rwanda are both East African Nations. (End)
