The United States appreciate Morocco’s continued support for the UN’s efforts in Libya, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Mr. David Schenker, said Monday 19th October in Rabat.
Speaking to reporters following talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Mr. Nasser Bourita, the U.S. official said his country “looks forward to a positive outcome from the UN-led intra-Libyan dialogue, which aims to create a new transitional government and chart the path to national elections.”
“We strongly support the UN-facilitated Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LDPF) as the means towards an inclusive, negotiated political solution to the conflict in Libya,” Mr. Schenker pointed out.
The U.S. official also praised the “generosity” demonstrated by the Kingdom through the establishment of a field hospital in Beirut whose services have benefited more than 50,000 Lebanese in the aftermath of the devastating explosion that took place in Beirut in August.
Schenker’s visit to Morocco is part of a tour of the U.S. senior diplomat (October 12-21) which began in Lebanon and is expected to end in the United Kingdom.
The US diplomat, who was accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Mr. David T. Fischer, will meet with Government officials to discuss opportunities to increase economic and security cooperation to further promote the U.S.-Morocco strategic partnership.
Reflecting a strong and long-standing alliance, the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States encompasses a multitude of diplomatic, defense and economic components, as well as cultural and human exchanges.
Several instruments have been put in place by both parties to enable this partnership to deploy its full potential, including the Strategic Dialogue, the Defense Advisory Committee, the Free Trade Agreement, in addition to the two Millennium Challenge compacts.
