COVID-19: There is no ground for complacency

John Bosco Kabera, police spokesperson

The reduction in cases of COVID-19 infections should not be defined as a ground for complacency but rather time for everyone to strictly observe the prevention directives and health practices to effectively combat the pandemic.

Rwanda National Police (RNP) spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera made the call on Monday, May 31, during a morning talk-show–Waramutse Rwanda–on Rwanda Television.

“This is not the time to lean back, undermine or disregard the directives in place because any reckless actions can lead us back to another wave of infections; no one wants that and as the Police, we will continue to work with all concerned authorities and the public in general to enforce the directives,” CP Kabera said.

He particularly warned those planning or hosting prohibited events such as wedding receptions.

“The number of guests for civil and religious wedding was increased from 20 to 30 people, but they must also adhere to the health guidelines,” the spokesperson noted.

“We have arrested several people in the recent past holding wedding receptions and those in tradition wedding ceremonies, who include the elderly, the most vulnerable group.

Receptions and tradional marriage functions are still prohibited. If you wish to have a reception, I can only advise to wait untill they are permitted.”

CP Kabera said that apologies after flouting the directives serves no purpose. He, however, said that violations related to the curfew have gone down as very few are arrested after 10pm. (End)
