Over 70% of patients at Ndera Hospital are young adults suffering from drug abuse

Dr. Bizoza RUTAKAYIRE reports that over 70% of patients at Ndera Neuropsychiatric Hospital are young adults, primarily suffering from drug abuse.

This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for action. More than 70% of this demographic is under 25, with substance abuse as a common issue. Among them, 42% are aged 20 to 39, 38% are over 40, and 20% are below 19.

The Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital CARAES, a branch of Ndera, saw a 29.6% increase in patients in the 2021/2022 fiscal year compared to the previous year.

Despite past successes, Student-Led Organizations (SLOs) recognize a significant awareness gap, particularly among non-health-related university students. They aim to redouble efforts to address this specific audience’s needs.

In collaboration with Solid Minds, RBC, and partners, this year’s campaign focuses on innovative approaches that raise awareness and yield practical benefits.

The goal is to help young individuals understand how daily life affects mental well-being, promoting mindfulness. (End)
