Police seize 460 litres of Kanyanga, three dealers arrested in Burera

Rwanda National Police (RNP) conducted separate operations in Burera District targeting traffickers and local dealers in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

In the process, Police arrested three people with 460 litres of kanyanga, an illicit crude gin.

“Sylvestre Hakizimana, 2, and Eight Irakiza, 28, were arrested separately in Gahunga sector with 28 and 26 litres of Kanyanga, respectively while their colleagues dropped down seven sacks of combined 186 litres and run away. Another suspect, Phoibe Munyana, 30, was arrested at her home in Cyanika sector where Police recovered 220 litres,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Aphrodis Nkundineza, the District Police Commander for Burera, said.

Munyana had hidden the crude gin in the latrine and covered it with grass.

He added that Police had acted on credible information from residents about people, who traffic kanyanga from Uganda through porous borders.

The DPC lauded the impact of community policing and public ownership to report dealers in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, which facilitates the police to break chains of suppliers and local retailers.

All the suspects have since been handed over to RIB for further investigations and legal process while the search of other traffickers, who run away is still ongoing.

Kanyanga is listed as a simple narcotic drug in Rwanda with an imprisonment of between seven and ten years and a fine of between Frw500, 000 and Frw1 million.  (End).
