Motorists reminded to be cautious in rainy season

Kigali: Rwanda National Police (RNP) reminds motorists to exercise caution during this rainy period.

This is because roads often become slippery, some develop puddles, and there may also be mist and fog that can hinder motorists’ visibility while driving – all of which can contribute to road accidents.

In the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro road safety awareness campaign, motorists are regularly urged to take every possible precaution to ensure their safety, a mandate that holds particular importance during the rainy season.

Rwanda Meteorological Agency announced that between September 1st and 10, rainfall ranging between 0 and 50 mm, is expected across the country.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road accidents claim approximately 1.3 million lives globally, with a majority of these accidents attributed to reckless driving habits.

The RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, has urged motorists to exercise caution while driving during this rainy season and particularly to inspect their vehicles before hitting the road.

“Vehicle owners are required to have their vehicles inspected to ensure they meet roadworthy standards. However, especially during this rainy period, motorists should inspect the condition of tires and replace any old ones to prevent accidents. It is also essential to ensure that the wipers are functioning properly,” said ACP Rutikanga.

The RNP spokesperson went on to emphasize the importance of checking whether vehicle lighting works properly, including both low and high beams stressing that it is also crucial to assess the condition of the brakes to prevent accidents.

Rutikanga reminded motorists to avoid parking beneath trees or in areas prone to flooding, l refrain from passing through puddles and stagnant waters.

He also advised motorists to reduce their driving speed in the event of heavy downpours.

Road crashes are among the top 10 causes of death in Rwanda.

A total of 3,094 road accidents were recorded between April and July this year, with the majority of these accidents attributed to the recklessness of motorists.

Accidents can be prevented when everyone adheres to traffic regulations and makes road safety a choice and culture.(End)
