Police warns against gender based violence

Kigali: Rwanda National Police (RNP) has warned against all sorts of abuses and called upon the general public to break silence on such human rights violations.

The call follows an incident on April 20, in Rubavu District where a man attacked his spouse with a machete.

The woman, who sustained serious injuries on the head, is currently admitted at Nyundo health center.

Jeanne Mukamusoni was at the time doing domestic chores at their home in Nyamyumba Sector, Kinigi Cell in Nyamiko Village, when her husband Donatien Uwamahoro returned home and attached her with a machete, Police said.

The Western Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, who condemned the act, said the husband had returned home drunk.

“The domestic misunderstanding was exacerbated by excessive consumption of alcohol,” CIP Gasasira said.

He said that such conflicts are largely fueled by excessive drinking, abusing drugs and male chauvinism.

A separate but similar incident also took place in Nyamagabe district, Cyanika sector, Karama cell, Birambo village, where on April 21, authorities arrested three people for injuring one Mediatrice Mukabukombo, 50, on the arm using a knife.

CIP Gasasira explained that in both cases the victims were evacuated and given medical attention.

“We call upon communities to identify and report such families experiencing domestic conflicts so as to address them before they turn violent. Misunderstandings are not solved by taking the law in your own hands because that’s criminal,” he said. (End)
