President Kagame in California for UN Broadband Commission

San Francisco: President Kagame is in San Francisco, California where he is today expected to deliver a keynote address at the United Nations Broadband Commission (BBComm) meeting to be hosted by Facebook at their Headquarters. The President will co-chair the annual meeting alongside Vice Co-chair and ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, Vice-President for Mobile and Global Access Policy at Facebook, Kevin Martin.

The main BBComm meeting will be preceded by Working Group meetings and followed by an Innovation tour.

Held under the theme Shaping the future of the Broadband for Sustainable Development, the commissioners and special guests will tackle three key areas; Digital transformation and the future of broadband for sustainable development, Feedback from working groups: Digital Infrastructure Moonshot in Africa and child safety online and Innovative partnerships in the digital ecosystem – fostering access, use and digital skills in the post 5-50 world.

The Broadband Commission was established in 2010 with the aim of boosting the importance of broadband on the international policy agenda and expanding broadband access in every country. In 2015, the Commission was re-launched as the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development following the adoption of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The President will later meet with Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer. In the evening, President Kagame will attend a World Economic Forum (WEF) Roundtable where he will speak to Sillicom Valley investors about opportunities in the tech sector.
