President Kagame participates in Extraordinary African Union Summit

President Kagame in virtually meeting is this weekend attending and participating in the 13th and 14th Extraordinary Sessions of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).

The 13th Extraordinary AU Summit has begun on the morning of 5 December 2020 to finalize the instruments of African Continental Free Trade Area so that trading may commence on 1 January 2021.

After the opening ceremony with statements by the Chairperson of the AU, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the Secretary General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, Wamkele Mene, participants will move into closed session.

President Kagame will make a statement during the closed session stressing the importance of AfCFTA to Africa’s integration and prosperity agenda.

The 14th Extraordinary AU Summit on 6 December 2020 is dedicated to the AU’s 50th anniversary declaration on “Silencing the Guns in Africa”, which is also the theme of the year 2020. A minute of silence will be observed in memory of fallen AU peacekeepers and victims of violence in Africa.

After the opening ceremony, the closed session will consider reports on the topic, and President Kagame and other Heads of State and Government will deliver statements. (End)
