President Kagame arrives in Addis Ababa for 37th AU Summit

President Kagame has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he joins other Heads of State and Government from across the African continent for the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union from 16th to18th February 2024

President Kagame will present a progress report on African Union reforms as the leader of the AU Institutional Reforms mandated by the Heads of State and Government of the Union. In the 8 years since the start of the reforms, the revamped Peace Fund now stands close to $400 million and financial contributions from member states have been largely fulfilled.

This year’s AU Summit will discuss the AU theme of the Year 2024 which is education, following a global Summit on Transforming Education convened by the UN Secretary-General in September 2022. The urgency stems from the global education crisis and the off-track progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4 as Africa faces significant challenges in achieving it. A snapshot of the education sector in Africa indicates efforts and progress in ensuring access, completion, and quality of education, with a focus on reducing out-of-school children and improving literacy rates.
