Primary Education: SAKURA-SHA Research Shows Learning Can be Easier Using Interactive Mathematics Software

On Wednesday 17 August, 2022 at REB meeting room, at 2:00pm, Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and SAKURA-SHA, a Japanese educational software and book publishing company, will have a Joint Seminar in order to share the results/achievements of the “Verification Survey on Utilization of ICT to Improve the Quality of Primary Mathematics Education in Rwanda” project under JICA’s private sector partnership program.

The project has been implemented by SAKURA-SHA since 2018 in collaboration with REB and JICA. This project has piloted a localized SAKURA-SHA software named Interactive Mathematics (IM), in 6 selected primary schools which have OLPC equipment in Kigali as well as in Nyagatare District. In addition, the Learning Management System (LMS) was also piloted whereby teachers can follow students effectively and efficiently for enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. This project has the following purposes: (1) to verify the effectiveness of the localized IM and (2) to discuss the way forward including how IM could contribute to Math class in public primary schools in Rwanda along the policy of “SMART Classroom”.

The joint seminar will be attended by Dr. Nelson MBARUSHIMANA, the Director General of REB, Mr. Shin MARUO, the Chief Representative of JICA Rwanda Office and Mr. Kenya YOKOYAMA, the President and Chief Executive Officer of SAKURA-SHA. During this seminar, SAKURA-SHA will not only report the achievements/results of the survey, especially how IM and the LMS improved the learning and teaching skills of primary mathematics among teachers and learners, but also will demonstrate how IM and LMS function. In addition, there will be further discussions on how SAKURA-SHA could collaborate with MINEDUC and REB for solving the challenges in Math Education based on the results/achievements.  (End)
