Official launch of “STELIR” Project aims to improve English proficiency of lower Secondary teachers

Today, Minister of State in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Gaspard Twagirayezu, officiated the launch of Secondary Teachers English Language improvement Rwanda “STELIR” Project which aims to improve English language proficiency of lower Secondary teachers in Rwanda.

In his opening remarks, Minister of State Gaspard Twagirayezu thanked the British Council Rwanda and Mastercard Foundation for the partnership in the education sector to ensure teachers have the required English proficiency as the project goal is to improve learning opportunities and outcomes for secondary school students.

“We all know that the role of language is key for both teachers and students to engage with the curriculum and to develop higher order thinking skills and be able to express complex ideas in a coherent way,” Minister of State Gaspard Gaspard Twagirayezu said.

“We believe through this project, our teachers will increase their ability to develop the language proficiency, equip them with IT literacy needed in the classrooms as well as help them to interact with their peers around the World,” he added.

“STELIR project, delivered by British Council Rwanda with Mastercard Foundation, will achieve sustainable change in Rwanda education by adapting training materials for REB Rwanda and  developing local English Teacher Trainers who can deliver training after the project ends”, according to the British Council Rwanda.  

Implemented in partnership with Rwanda Basic Education Board(REBb), British Council Rwanda and Mastercard Foundation, the project will work with 6,000 in-service teachers across 14 districts, plus 1,000 teachers in training at University of Rwanda College of Education.  (End)
